In this workshop we will introduce mathematical modelling and Matlab. We will explore matrices and vectors, nonlinear optimization, finite element analysis, and data animation.

Session 1 – Introduction to Matlab (the Matlab user interface, basic coding in Matlab, working with vectors and matrices, simple statistics in Matlab, basic graphs in Matlab)

Session 2 - Nonlinear optimization in Matlab

Session 3 – Finite element analysis in Matlab

Session 4 – Creating data animations and Graphical User Interfaces in Matlab

This workshop consists of 4 x 1.5 hour sessions in PowerPoint, and 4 x 1.5 hour sessions doing computer exercises in Matlab.

It is assumed that workshop participants have no previous exposure to Matlab. Participants with some previous exposure will find it easier to understand the more advanced material in the workshop. A basic knowledge of mathematics (such as matrices and vectors) or statistics (such as t-tests) is assumed.
